San Juan 2010

Tonight there will be bonfires lit around the island of Lanzarote to celebrate the eve of San Juan, which marks the summer solstice and takes place on the shortest night of the year.

Yes Already it’s that time!

The bonfires are said to signify purification, on occasion people will jump over the fire up to three times to cleanse. Originally the Conejero community would venture to bathe in the Ocean for the first time.

Our children always love this event, driving home at night to our house on a hill, they look around at the spots of amber, glistening in the darkness around our village. Though more importantly than this, their three month summer holiday begins, as today the schools have closed here on the Island…..Summer is officially on!
