The Cesar Manrique Foundation
Fundacion De César Manrique (founded in 1982)
Formerly the home of Lanzarotes most influential force, this project best represents the artistic and personal ideals of the man himself..
César Manrique Cabrera.
Background information: Manrique built the house in 1968 on top of a volcanic trail from an eruption which occurred in 1730-36, Timanfaya National Park. The natural formation of five volcanic bubbles were used to make an unusual, exemplary living space on the lower level. True to his vision for all of his work in Lanzarote, César planned the upper level and exterior image of his home in line with themes from traditional Lanzarote architecture.
The foundation was created in 1982 by César and his close circle of friends, who each had the united objective to promote architecture which is in harmony with the local natural environment of Lanzarote. Four years later, César donated his home to the foundation and moved to a much loved area in the north of Lanzarote - Haria.
Almost two decades have passed since Lanzarote lost a much loved inspiration. Following the death of César in 1992, his original home in Tahiche became the official César Manrique Foundation, here visitors can view the advanced vision of César & friends. The Foundation team has produced and organized many comprehensive exhibitions over the years, including an event for a fellow Lanzarote resident, recently deceased Nobel prize winning author, José Saramago.
Why visit? A 'must see' for all visitors to Lanzarote with an interest for art, visual stimulation, history and an insight to the man behind an exemplary vision. Not to mention this is one of the coolest pads you are ever likely to Stumble Upon..
