Haria Village

Valley of 1000 Palms: During the 17th and 18th Century the local villagers in the northern Lanzarote region of Haria would plant palm trees to celebrate the birth of a baby, one for a baby girl and two for a baby boy. It's thought that this tradition was started because villagers felt the need to compensate the land in reaction to the burning of most of Haria’s trees and plants by pirates during the 1570’s.

Today in Haria over 1000 mature Palms stand tall to mark the tradition.

Haria lends its name to a wider municipality which encompasses the northern end of Lanzarote. The Haria village itself is home to around 2,000 inhabitants and the town area is a rural must see, leading in from the Valley of 1,000 Palms which is surrounded by Lanzarote’s tallest mountain range — El Risco de Famara.

Every Saturday from 9 am there is a local produce market in Haria village.

This weekly affair is much smaller than other markets held around the island, but the quaint location in the Plaza De Leon y Castillo twined with the locally produced quality foods: Fresh fruit at the stall which is run by members of the local farmers association, goats cheese, local sauces, wines, herbal liquors, aloe vera products, plus a whole variety of local crafts and live music means that visitors can feel involved in the real Lanzarote vibe, so often missed when in the larger tourist areas.
