Jameos del Agua
The volcanic cave opening (founded in 1966)
Designed by Jesus Soto, Luis Morales & César Manrique, 1968
Formed by the lava flow from the Monte La Corona volcanic eruption over 3,000 years ago. Lava advanced and the surface solidified, while gas trapped beneath the surface caused some areas to collapse, forming a ‘Jameo’ which in this case means 'opening'.
Background information: The Canarian government first opened Jameos to the viewing public in 1966, as a local centre for Art, Culture and tourism.
César Manrique, viewed the area with bigger ideas in mind, and so in 1968 with the help of Luis Morales and Jesus Soto the beautiful attraction was founded. Over the years many additions have been made including: A swimming pool, gardens, a restaurant/bar area, and in typical Manrique fashion, everything blends seamlessly with the surrounding volcanic landscapes.
Auditorium added to Jameos in 1987, with seating for 600 people
One of the most impressive additions to Jameos, and a spectacular form of Natural beauty meets design genius. The Auditorium which has recently re-opened, is highly renowned for its excellent level of accoustics, there are often events held here, including the premier of the 2009 Pedro Almodovar film, Los Abrazos rotos (Broken Embraces), starring Penelope Cruz.
Why visit? César Manrique once referred to Jameos del Agua as "The most beautiful nightclub in the world". Upon visiting this uniquely designed attraction, you get the distinct impression that the creation by Cesar Manrique, Jesus Soto & Luis Morales, upon a 3000 year old natural canvas, was indeed intended to be a superlative location to entertain each of your senses.
