Lanzarote a volcanic Island

Lanzarote was the first Canary Island to rise from the Atlantic ocean around 30 million years ago. The most recent volcanic eruptions took place in the 18th & 19th century, by far the most notorious eruption occured from September 1730 until 1736.

Lanzarote exports

Lanzarote receives less rain per year than parts of the Sahara Desert, just 14cm per year, although there has been a slight increase in recent years. Camels were used throughout history to work the land with farmers and many descendents of the animal (brought over from nearby Mauritania) remain on the island as a tourist attraction and island symbol.

Second to the lovely local wines made from the vast vineyards across La Geria, a slightly less obvious local produce and export is cochineal, extracted from an insect found on cacti mainly in the Mala/Guatiza Cactus fields

Lanzarote tourism

In 1966 a hotel opened in Puerto Del Carmen, the Hotel Fariones, four years later the first passenger terminal opened in Arrecife airport - Island tourism was born.

In 1993 UNESCO declared Lanzarote to be a Biosphere Reserve, in turn this has since reinforced a sustainable and cultural approach to tourism, therefore the local authorities have maintained a strict control on the island development.
