Background information: During the 16th Century Mirador was used as a lookout point by Spanish settlers. Pirate invasion and pillaging was common place at this time, and continued for the best part of 200 years. During the year 1898 a small gun battery and a fortress were added to Mirador, by this time Spain was at war with the USA, over Spanish ownership of Cuba. Today the guns sit pride of place in the Arrecife Museum Castillo De San Jose, and Mirador sits pride of place, as one of Lanzarote's most spectacular places to contemplate the Canary islands at their very best.

Why visit? To look at this view is to know that you have visited the Canary Islands, and taken in a piece of heaven. Bondesque quality chic design by Cesar Manrique & friends, together with the serenity of the views makes for an experience not to be missed.

What to expect: The original plan was to make Mirador Del Rio an exclusive, number one restaurant venue. The curved glass walls in the open plan seating area were later mirrored in the design of the Castillo San Juan restauraunt in Arrecife. Though Mirador does not house a restaurant, there is a bar/cafeteria serving light snacks and beverages, and on the upper level a small souvenir shop.

What to take: A camera, you will want to capture the beautiful views. Remember to take a light jacket/jumper as it can be windy on the outer viewing gallery areas.

Location: The journey to Haria on the LZ10, past Teguise, Los Valles, through the valley of 1000 Palms, on to Ye village reaching Mirador Del Rio is the most scenic route you can take, make sure you have your camera ready!
