Parque Nacional Timanfaya
Timanfaya National Park (founded in 1963)
UNESCO designated the Biosphere Reserve in 1993
Background information: Lanzarote is the oldest of the Canary islands, first formed by aggressive volcanic activity over 18 million years ago.
The Fire Mountains are a group of over 100 craters which were created by the most recent eruptions between 1730 and 1736. During this time several villages and huge portions of land across the island where devastated by volcanoes which rose from the earth, covering more than 50 km².
The last recorded activity occurred in 1824 but the area appears much the same as it did at the end of the 18th century. El Diablo – the devil of Timanfaya is the park symbol which was created by Cesar Manrique. Why visit? Whether you wish to learn more about the history of the eruptions, appreciate the diverse and stunning views or simply remind yourself just how powerful mother nature can be, this undeniably awe inspiring area is an absolute must see.
This more than just a day out, it’s an education for the young and the - not so young! There is an element of fun to Timanfaya experience including the opportunity for a short camel ride (entrance fee does not include the camel ride).
What to expect: While it is not possible to just wander freely around the Volcanoes, there is a bus tour included in the entrance fee. The tour of the park features an audio commentary which includes excerpts from the diary of a local Priest who was an eyewitness to the devastating Eruptions.
Temperatures just a few metres below the surface of the ground reach between 400°C and 600°C at the Park, there are demonstrations which create a mini-geyser at various intervals throughout the day.
The 'El Diablo' restaurant serves Canarian food which is cooked using geothermal heat (A cast-iron grill placed over a large hole in the ground). It is advisable to arrive here early if you would like to sample the food as the kitchen closes at 3.00pm.
What to take: A camera! There are plenty of astoundingly beautiful views which you will want to capture. Remember to take sensible footwear and a light jacket/jumper as it can be quite windy within the park area even when the weather seems fine in other parts of the island.
